The 1960s thus drew to a somewhat ignominious close as regards the ?dark industry' that continued to profit by the marketing of this highly toxic product.

This was the peak of its success, but all achieved dishonestly.

Matters were not to improve in the 1970s, when the advent of water-soluble contrast media presented rival products that required even more sterling tactics from the manufacturers, despite a growing body of medical literature.
