Dear Doc Sara, I originally posted this question underArachnoiditis questions, but hope you can tell me if it is safe to continue doing mat based Body Control Pilates. I can only do basic exercises (at home) when my pain levels allow. My neurologist and gastric specialist both assure me I should continue to exercise with gentle stretching etc. I have monitored when I do pilates to see if it corresponds with a flare up - which it doesn't. I would really appreciate some input as I have strived for years to strengthen my low back, where my problem originated from after being treated with steroids for an L4/5 prolapsed disc. I do worry though, that stretching opposite arms and legs has caused further internal scarring and the progressive spondylosis up my thorasic and cervical spine. Look forward to your response. Thanks and keep well.

Dear Helen,

well, it all depends on whether you feel that the exercises are helping and not causing too much increase in pain. Some increase in pain may occur, but so long as you don't bring on a flare-up then I don't see a problem with carrying on. In fact I think it is very good to keep as active as possible to prevent deconditioning which leads onto lots of muscle aches and pains whenever you try to do anything.

So do keep at it if you think it is worthwhile. Let us know how you get on

Regards,

DocSarah

Dear Doc Sarah
Really pleased to get a positive reponse from you. If I can't do any exercise for one week I feel quite stiff and notice the difference. You have lifted my spirits and made me feel happier about continuing to exercise.
Very grateful for your time, regards Helen:cheer:
